“You go to your closet and you select that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean. And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent wasn’t it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers.” Meryl Streep to Ann Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada
As Meryl Streep knew, and Ann Hathway soon learnt, a blue is not just a blue. Instead blue exists under many different disguises and the particular shade of the season defines the season. Well the colour of AW2013 is going to be Cobalt and is being showcased on the catwalk:
Although it’s a winter colour it’s easy to see the designers longing for summer as the ocean surely acted as a muse.
I love this colour because it’s so striking against black – creating a bold and loud impact. Unlike many blues it’s not on the cold side because it’s so deep and vibrant. There are so many ways to work this colour too – keep it to accents, go bold head to toe or emphasis the colour with a colour clash of mustard, lime or hot pink:
If colour clash is a step too far don’t panic because cobalt lends itself naturally to a pool of other blues such as royal blue and navy as shown by Sportmax who combine Colbalt, Navy, Royal Blue and Black:
Is cobalt blue one for you?
