NYFW | Four Fashion Must Haves. By Victoria
So NYFW is coming to a close in a couple of days and it’s good to recap what we’ve actually learned. Here is my summary of the week that was:
SS14 is The Season of Pastels
The fashion pack aren’t really known for their love of pastels, often too mainstream, too twee, not colour block enough to cause jaw drops when paraded down the catwalk only this season came a wind of change and it was pastel coloured. Pastels were big news with pale pinks and blues opening the show by Alexander Wang. Gucci favoured the palest peach while Prabal Gurung used a lavender shade previously favoured by the Queen Mother.
Over-sized Sack Dresses are Big (literally).
Victoria Beckham is often known for her clean, tight lines but this season she showcased something much more feminine and looser in her Victoria by Victoria Beckham range. In particular was her dropped waist cocoon blue dress which she also wore to to step out in front of buyers and editors. Victoria emphasised that the dress felt ”like a cake” to wear and came about after countless experiments on how fabric moves away from the body. Victoria insisted this dress will stop anyone feeling ”big or frumpy’ and maintains that she still feels ”really sexy” in the dress. A dress to hide our sins, defo one for me!
It’s All in The Legs: Skirts Are Back
After the fashion world’s flirtation with shorts the skirt was kinda pushed to the back of our wardrobe and forgotten about. But, from SS14, skirts are taking it back in the form of the power skirt, a skirt that grabs attention first usually through a thigh high split. The key to statement skirts is simple, fuss free, tops so stock up on your basics now.
The White Shirt is a Wardrobe Staple
Designers Peter Som and Max Azria both said a plain white button-down shirt is their favorite thing to see on a woman and judging by the presence of countless white shirts during NYFW it seems many other designers were in agreement. But before you make the mistake of thinking ”hey I have a white shirt already” follow Jason Wu’s comments:
“Ease isn’t easy, the things you think are going to be simple can sometimes be really hard.”
This season look for a white shirt that shows a little attention to detail – is there some extra embellishment or detail on the collar? Is the cut cropped and in-line with the season’s must have cut? It’s all in the details.
