OK so it’s hardly fair that we keep telling you about the recent trends to come out of London and New York Fashion week without properly updating you on how to get the look. First up is the pastel trend because it’s predicted to be one of the biggest statements to define SS14 and one we loved in our NYFW round up of the biggest trends to watch out for.
When it comes to the pastel look the most popular colours on the catwalk were dusty blue, pale peach and lavender. Pale pink wasn’t shown because it’s one of the most popular colours for this AW13 and we predict we will all be done with it by the time the sun is out. Other colours to explore are pastel yellow (though not the easiest to wear) and a sage green, it’s just important to keep it really really light.
To achieve the catwalk look of Prabal Gurung it’s really important that you keep your top and your bottom half co-ordinating in the same colour.
Instead look for tops and bottoms of the same colour, we can assume this will be made easy for us by the fashion world who know that this is an upcoming trend. See our inspiration here:
Of course if this look is not for you and your prefer not to look so twee in co-ordinating tops and bottoms then it is possible to mix it up, like Prabal Gurung, by combing bold statement pieces with pastels.
Above we show how a statement Prabal Gurung top can look with pastel bottoms or a statement skirt can work with a pastel top. The key to this look is to totally clash loud prints and colours with a softer palette so in the above we took a loud fuschia and teamed it with pale peach while a bright aqua is teamed with pale yellow. Here fabric also plays an important role because the silk finish really stops the outfit from seeming coordinated. It’s important that when not wearing coordinating pastels that the pieces you combine are really bright (almost loud) don’t be tempted to take another pastel or pale piece.
Finally we know pastels aren’t for everyone as they come with many faults including the fact that they dirty easily and wash most of us out. But don’t make this a reason to totally miss the trend because there are some really accessible pastel items out there that can instantly update your look and bring it straight into SS14, in particular a statement jacket:
C’mon girls now you know how easy pastels can be to wear nothing should be holding you back.
