Three Things PFW Taught Us

Now Paris Fashion Week has come to a close it’s only fair we sum up the key learnings from the week that was. Here is our prediction for what to look out for Spring Summer 2014.

Good bye Chanel Tweed, Hello Biker.

Hedi Slimane is determined to pull  (Yves) Saint Laurent away from traditional versions of Parsian chic, almost the anti Chanel.  His collection was heavily leather inspired, punk-ess and with an undeniable goth influence.  It was not a summer bright, happy go lucky collection but it did unite a large audience who coveted the latest version of his infamous Perfecto biker jacket.  The jacket, which was featured with both long sleeves and short sleeves has already been seen on Kate Moss so we can expect the fashion pact to follow.  The days of chic tweed are gone, leather is the new statement of summer.

Patchwork Jeans Are Thee Jean

Sometimes trends are determined not just by what we see on the catwalk but what we see on the FROW.  There is no bigger measure of a off-catwalk commercial success than seeing those in the know wear your collection so we can only image Junya Watanabe’s smile when several fashion editors and critics turned up in her Patchwork Jeans. In fact on Sunday alone Net-a-Porter’s Kay Barron, Grazia editor Jane Bruton and Stylist’s Alex Fullerton all wore the must have denim.

Unfortunately the price tag exceeds 500 bucks but fashion bloggers are raving about them and Fashion editors are wearing them so it won’t be long before the highstreet catches on and a more affordable version will land in store soon.  Watch this space.

Build Me Up Buttercup

Pastels are still big (as we said they would be), in particular Buttercup as shown at London Fashion Week.  However, Paris has gone one further with the yellow trend and promised that the colour to channel for next season is no mere pale Buttercup but a foil sheen usually seen on a toffee penny in a box of Quality Street. Both Lanvin and YSL paraded golden party frocks (yes for summer) while Dries Van Noten featured gold-leaf ruffles against a fitting gold backdrop. Go get your gold on.
